The Plug Socket

Sockets & Switches – Switch on to style

How our funny looking household electrical socket/receptacle came to be with its HOT, Neutral and Ground holes and matching plugs. Includes why Neutral is connected to ground and why we have a separate Ground wire connected to Earth ground. Also, why the ground wire is connected to metal cases and how all this helps prevent electrical shocks.

In this video, peoples, let’s take a look at various different pin configurations, their standards, and how to convert from one-to-another, using convertor leads.

The Standards discussed and shown in this video are:

BS 1363 (13A),
BS 546 (15A) and…
BS EN 60309-2 (240v, 16A)
(otherwise known as BS 4343)

The convertor leads shown in the video are all home-made, by purchasing the relevent plug and connector, and three-core flex.

To ensure that the full load can be handled, THE MINIMUM SIZE of the flex should be 1.5mm, and because these are convertor leads, it is best to keep the length less than one metre. (approx 3ft)

This video is the last in the PLUGS mini-series.

Plugs: More adaptors…..Bayonet Cap adaptors

Posted by CharlesC on Jun-23-2011

In this next video in the PLUGS mini-series, we carry on with adaptors. This time however, we get to look at adaptors associated with Bayonet Cap lamp holders.

It was not uncommon years ago, to plug things into light sockets other than light bulbs: Shavers, and even low-wattage electric irons (normally around 3-400w back then!) so therefore, adaptors were needed in order to connect these things into light sockets.

Makes of equipment in this video include British General ( Still around today, known as BG ) and CLANG. The brown lamp holder is made by Rock.

In this video, I use the adaptors in different various configurations, and I even power-up a few of them, just to show that they are still very much useable!

Even though I do use a few of the adaptors in mains-powered lighting sockets from one week to the next, I DO NOT RECOMMEND that you find light socket adaptors like these, and do the same thing.

If you do so, then it is entirely at your own risk, and I will not accept responibility or liability for injury / death, or damage to property. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED !

Due to modern electrical regulations, and also because of how tricky / dodgy some of these adaptors are, the majority of them are no longer produced, or for that matter, not permitted for import into the UK. Nowadays, generally as a rule, the only thing plugged into light sockets are light bulbs.

…..And BoomBoxDeluxe’s shaver! :-D

Remember peoples, stay safe, and don’t dice with electricity!

I this video, peoples, we look at another socket.

This one has been combined with some other function….

Hold on a moment! If you have seen a unit similar to the one about to be shown, then keep on watching anyway…..I will show you something about this one, that you probably didn’t know!

It only features on the units having a 15A, BS 546 socket. It does not feature on the modern up-to-date units that have a 13A, BS 1363 socket.

The thing about these 15A socket units however…..They’re no longer made.
These days, you can only buy these units with a 13A socket on them.

So there we are, peoples!

Another electrical rarity brought to you by BoomBoxDeluxe!

Big THANXX to YouTube as always!
