Volvo Plug-in Hybrid Animation

Posted by admin on Jun-8-2009

Swedish energy company Vattenfall and the Volvo Car Corporation are launching an industrial joint venture partnership to introduce Plug-in hybrids on the market in 2012. The ground-breaking technology will considerably lower the environmental impact from traffic. In addition, owning a Plug-in hybrid vehicle will be convenient since the car can be charged from a regular household wall socket at home (costing only 3 Euro per 100km) and fuel costs are significantly lower, using only 2 litres per 100 km. The battery takes about five hours to charge from a standard wall socket, and the battery is also charged every time the car’s brakes are applied. Volvo Cars will manufacture the cars and Vattenfall will develop charging systems and supply the cars with electricity.

Ford’s Hydrogen-Powered, Plug-In Hybrid

Posted by admin on May-26-2009

We took a spin yesterday in the Ford HySeries Edge, the world’s first working plug-in, fuel-cell, hydrogen-powered car, which the Detroit automaker plans to show off as a concept at the New York auto show tomorrow. Though wafting zero-emissions exhaust in our face taught us plenty as to the realities of a hydrogen-powered automotive experience, what really made our test special was actually being able to drive a car running on advanced hydrogen fuel-cell technology that can power itself with a 336-volt battery pack.

Toyota Plug-In Prius (PHEV) Press Release

Among “green” car owners, the OEM plug-in hybrid, or “PHEV”, is seen as the next evolutionary step in auto efficiency.

PHEV’s plug into a source of electricity to recharge their batteries, then travel on pure electric power for a distance and get fuel efficiency ratings in the 100+ MPG range afterwards, thus reducing gasoline consumption, and significantly reducing pollution as well (even when the electricity comes from coal plants).

Toyota released this video shortly after getting permission from the Japanese government to test drive their prototype PHEV on public roads. So far, no other company is this far along in development of a PHEV, though Chevy is trying to develop their “Volt” concept, and Ford wants an electric vehicle by 2010 as well.

Visit NJRenewableEnergy.com A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) is a hybrid vehicle with batteries that can be recharged by connecting a plug to an electric power source. It shares the characteristics of both conventional hybrid electric vehicles, having an electric motor and a backup internal combustion engine (ICE) for power, and of battery electric vehicles, also having a plug to connect to the electric grid. Most PHEVs on the road today are passenger cars, but there are also PHEV …
