Just spilled liquid into electrical socket?

I just tip over something with liquid in it and some got int a electrical socket. It smoked and sizzled for a while but is dying down with just a little bit sizzling coming and going. I have a fire extinguisher for electrical fires standing by. Should I be worried. I don’t use the socket so I don’t care if it never usable again.
yeah, but WHAT liquid? beer? you have to LICK THAT UP. that’s alcohol abuse.

might wanna turn the breaker off and let it dry.

Turn off the circuit breaker and have the outlet replaced

Yeah, turn the breaker off. The sizzling means there is a short circuit. A short circuit could cause the wires to heat up anywhere in that circuit, and could start a fire anywhere between that socket and the main board.

You should turn the breaker off and let it dry. It should have tripped the breaker in the first place. It doesn’t sound like a safe outlet any way. It wouldn’t hurt to have an electrician look at it.

What kind of liquid was it? If it contained mainly water and’/or drinking alcohol, then it’s not going to cause significant issues as long as YOU don’t touch it while it’s wet and the breaker is still on. The liquid, although passing enough current to heat up and bubble/fizzle was not conducting enough current to blow the breaker.
Turn the breaker off. Spray the outlet with WD-40 (water displacement formula try # 40) and clean any residue. A good final cleaning would be to use denatured alcohol which will remove most of the WD and leave no liquid behind.
When all is dry, turn breaker back on.
