The Plug Socket

Sockets & Switches – Switch on to style

We’re having a new gas hob installed as part of a kitchen revamp and I gather the electrical socket has to be moved at least 300mm to the side of the hob, as building regs have changed. Is it possible to move it straight over to one side or do we need a new ring main as well, as one contractor has suggested?

As said you cant hide a joint in cables so blank plate over old socket, but I thought it was 150mm(6") & not 300mm(12").

It can be moved horizontally but the connections at the original location must be accessible ie a blanking plate fitted instead of the socket front.

If your home is council owned then you should not tackle the job and you must go round to your local council offices and talk to them about it, you may also need permission to do the alterations as well.

Plug in an open ended cable; turn the gas on, rub the live and neutral wires together.
    That should move the socket.
