Sockets & Switches – Switch on to style

If I were to buy a multiple phone package from say Argos (UK) with a base and 2 additional handsets, would the 2 additional handsets require a direct phone line into them or do they just connect wirelessly to the base station with a mains charging station for each?

Only the main base requires a phone line, the other bases are for charging only and don’t require a phone line.

I’m installing a 100w light in a garage that only has a mains ring (spur) running to it. What kind of in-line fuse and fusebox do I need to install to run this safely?

The previous occupant had run the light wired directly off the mains socket, I’m fairly sure this is not safe as the mains ring is fused much higher than is safe for a low-amp bulb like this.
I should clarify that the light will be hard-wired into the back of the mains socket, not running from a plug.

As such, the fuse needs to be in a fusebox or as someone suggested, a fused lightswitch if this is acceptable.

You’ve had some funny answers, even from an ‘electrician’. Use a switched fused spur with a 3 amp fuse fitted. You can draw 750watts through a 3 amp fuse before it blows. A 100w bulb would not draw .833 amps, but .4 amp. (Ohm’s Law).

I’m going trekking in Mexico for a month, and ideally want to take my digital camera. It doesn’t take disposable batteries – just an NP-40 battery which charges using a cradle plugged into a mains socket – we won’t have access to mains power much. We’ve been searching the internet for days and can’t find any sort of charger [eg. solar, windup etc] which would suit it… Does anyone know what I should do for it?
Sorry yeah, we won’t have access to cars [or civilisation in general, hahaha]. Indeed I have a solar charger already, and it can’t charge camera cradles. Thanks :-]

If I were you, I would just buy another camera (one which uses AA batteries). Because, it seems to be your best choice in the situation. Besides, the Fujifilm F650 is getting a little old now, isn’t it? A brand new camera (that’s better than yours) will be cheaper to buy than what yours originally cost. So, updating makes sense.

With AA batteries, you can take along as many as you can carry. For travelling (and when you have no access to power) the logical choice of battery to use is non rechargeable Lithium, such as "Energizer® Ultimate Lithium". They last up to 8x that of ordinary batteries and are well worth the expense. To conserve battery life, be sure to turn off the LCD screen in-between shots, limit how long you review your images and also limit the use of the flash.

Happy trekking (and shooting)…

The compressor is rated at 1.5Kw/ 2HP, its only a 25 litre one and my other equipment is rated at a wattage of 2500 watts @ 240VAC. I’ve heard that the compressor needs more power to start up? I’ve had a quick calculation and the generator I need seems huge, yet I can power these two from a simple mains socket. Please help?!

A 5kva gen should be sufficient. I don’t think the car battery and inverter would work.

this laptop keeps swapping to battery power even though it is plugged into the mains. The wall socket is a 2-pin lighting socket and we have other devices connected to it.

The question is – is having several things connected likely to drop the power and cause the laptop transformer to stop, or perhaps the laptop recognises a drop in power and switches to battery?

We were about to take the laptop back to the shop but it works OK in another room.

Well, it is possible that having several things on one outlet is an issue.

But those things would need to draw a lot of amps to cause your glitch.

I’m leaning towards the outlet being bad. It seems as though you’re getting enough of a brown condition to have the power supply flip to battery.

I’d have the outlet looked at (or do it yourself). See if you can add the ground (and really ground it to a ground lead).

if you need to use the outlet as is, buy a power conditioner.

They are about $50-75.ea in the end it would be cheaper to get an electrician to check the line.

How do you connect your Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) TV to the Antenna (External Antenna – that pops up above the edge of the floor/carpet with the lead from the garage underneath) and also connect your CRT TV to a Set Top Box as well, considering the TV only has one main socket at the back/rear of it?

I don’t mean the sockets for audio and video/visual that use those black leads with red, yellow and white plugs/ends on them.

Another thing is, there are two CRT TV’s in our home, and the other TV (in the other room/part of the house) is connected via the drill hole in the floor to the antenna lead underneath in the garage. Yet my old TV I think needed a splitter to to have a antenna lead connected between it, the garage and the antenna on the roof.
This main junction in the garage (or whatever it’s called) where the leads for the external antenna connect/meet, how does that work when you have more than one TV/lead connected to it? Are there two/multiple sockets/outlets for it? I’m looking at Digital TV.
However we’ll probably need to have new lead/cable fitted (plus a new antenna) to pass the Digital Signal on from the Antenna to my TV anyway.
I’m thinking, we may end up needing two separate leads/cables, one from the external Antenna (on the roof) to the main point in the garage (which the other TV in the other room in the house is above), then a second lead/cable running from that point in the garage across underneath the house, in the garage along to where my room is to connect to my TV.

To receive the digital signal, does the lead connected to the piece from the hole in the carpet/floor in my room to my TV, need to be a digitally compatible piece of lead/cable too or not?
Thank you

ok you neea like 175 ohm to 300 ohm adapter(i think)itll screw to the tv,unless you have a coaxial antenna jack.then you use like a game splitter hooked in.all your other leads hook to the in side of the game splitter and the out goes to the tv coaxial jack.also will need a splitter inline from the antenna so the signal can go 2 places at once with a digital adapter hooked to it and out to your game switcher.you can get everything at wally world if you wanted.the game splitter will allow you to have more than 1 input in

I always thought when you switched it off at the socket, no power went through, but I notice people always mention actually pulling the plug out when they refer to doing stuff to cut down on electricity usage.

There is no difference. If there is a switch on the socket then that kills the power as well.

Tektronix IEC socket

Posted by CharlesC on Sep-11-2009

It seems strange that the cable entry is covering a knockout a bit smaller than an IEC mains socket, with enough room for the socket and its wiring! Fixed cables are annoying…..
