It smoked and sizzled for a while but is dying down with just a little bit sizzling coming and going. I have a fire extinguisher for electrical fires standing by. Should I be worried. I don’t use the socket so I don’t care if it never usable again.

I just moved into a new apartment and all the electrical outlets are upside down, and I need to have at least one right side up. I haven’t done anything with electrical stuff before, so I want to make sure everything is safe and I won’t mess anything up.
We do not have access to brakers. My roommate’s family switched one of hers while we were not here, so I know it’s possible, but we weren’t here to see how they did it

What is upside down to you?

In my home, the round ground connection is on the top of those outlets that are controlled by a light switch. The ground connection is on the bottom of the unswitched outlets.

Turn off the circuit breaker that controls power to the socket(s).
Remove the cover plate (single screw in the center).
Remove the top and bottom mounting screws
Pull out the socket by the top and bottom mounting tabs (where the screws were)
Rotate the socket
Reinstall the screws and cover plate.
