How to move electrical socket further from gas hob?

We’re having a new gas hob installed as part of a kitchen revamp and I gather the electrical socket has to be moved at least 300mm to the side of the hob, as building regs have changed. Is it possible to move it straight over to one side or do we need a new ring main as well, as one contractor has suggested?
As said you cant hide a joint in cables so blank plate over old socket,but I thought it was 150mm(6") & not 300mm(12").
